INTEGRAL AFRICAN CONFERENCE

ABSTRACT FOR THE PANEL DISCUSSION

FRIDAY 7 JUNE 2019

Co-determination as a way to stimulate emotional and socio-economic

settlements in a reimagined South Africa.

In 1994 a political settlement (our Constitution) came into being in South Africa but now 25 years later emotional and socio-economic settlements have still not been realised. This is underscored by the racism, other inequalities and failures prevalent in South Africa at this stage and also by the recent ratings of the IMD World Economic Forum competitiveness report.

The applicability and efficacy of co-determination (the cooperation between management and worker representatives at board level) is assessed in the light of the initiative at ESKOM in the 1990’s as a possible way to stimulate emotional and socio-economic settlements in a reimagined South Africa.
